AXIS MUNDI

Last weekend I went downtown to CB1 Gallery to see the AXIS MUNDI exhibit. At the entrance there are geometric patterns and masterpieces made out of metallic paper by Timothy Nolan. His composition was perfect with a variety of polarized shapes and contrasts on white backgrounds. Moving further down the room I observed Osvaldo Trujillo’s drawings made with graphite on paper which looked beautiful and flawless. Trujillo is a surrealist contemporary artist and I found his drawings very intriguing with the concepts of how he managed mix concepts of nature with a sort of futuristic technology or machinery. Although the pieces were not titled, the drawing that stood out most to me was of an uneven circular shape filled with vivid and detailed strings and ovals. His technique in shading is remarkable and truly admirable. Lastly, at the end of the room, there was amazing sculptures made of Styrofoam by Jaime Scholnick. These sculptures were made with intricate design using an ink medium and cut out into interesting shapes. My favorite Styrofoam sculpture by Scholnick was the “two towers” which stood around 10-12 feet tall in the middle of the back room. Scholnick’s precision in cutting out the shapes and detailing the blocks was exquisite. Overall I enjoyed making the visit to CB1 gallery and looking at all these new, innovative forms of contemporary art. This exhibit definitely opens an individual’s eyes in using new mediums. The AXIS MUNDI exhibit is from March 20-April 18 and I strongly recommend artists attend.
