Art Against the Empire

The LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibition) opened an exhibition about political posters around the world. Most of the posters were about the past wars that historically created a big impact around the globe. Each poster symbolized some kind of morality, ethics, and satire about politics and war, and was really powerful telling messages about them.

Looking at the posters, I was intrigued and influenced how messages were portrayed. The posters were very clever. When looking at the Korean War posters, my head was filled with my grandmother's past stories about how she was able to survive in that tragic era. Realizing how these posters impacted many others, I was influenced and thus was able to create what I have done for project 5. I mainly took the idea of making my poster, like most of the political posters, portraying my message without being too literal. My trip to the exhibition truly helped me mold my ideas, and I would like to visit LACE for other upcoming exhibitions.

I visited war poster exhibition in hollywood. Most of them were made with very drastic image that can alarm people. It has critical comment on the morality of war. War poster has very clear and easy image to understand. Inspired by this, when I creat my own poster, I want to use vey clear and easy image that can be easily communicated with people.

Inspirational quotes for arrrting?... I think so!

Its that time again when the pressure is on to create something unique & intriguing for Design Fundamentals...and honestly, I am scared. Ever-present questions that swirl in my noggin: What hasn't been done in art? How can I create something that would actually interest people for more than a few minutes? What am I trying to convey? ....urrrrggh.... well shoot, I sound like a little lost soul, huh. Upon epic procrastination, I stumbled upon [and yes, please go to stumbleupon.com right now because if you aren't creating art, then you should at least be inspired by it!] some good advice/inspirational quotes that I thought were pretty relevant to my current design predicament. Thought I'd share a few, cus maybe you're in a similar situation too... or just feel like reading some nice art-related quotes.

here's the ACTUAL page: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2QQnae/inspire.boranikolic.com/

and here's some of the quotes :)

"Think of and look at your work as though it were done by your enemy. If you look at t to admire it, you are lost"- Samuel Butler

"Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service"- Steve Jobs

"Don’t make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don't hesitate to make it beautiful"- Shaker Design Philosophy

"To understand the meaning of design is… to understand the part form and content play… and to realize that design is also commentary, opinion, a point of view, and social responsibility. To design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even to edit; it is to add value and meaning, to illuminate, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, to dignify, to dramatize, to persuade, and perhaps even to amuse. Design is both a verb and a noun.It is the beginning as well as the end, the process and product of imagination" - Paul Rand

Visited the exhibition mentioned in class over the weekend showing political posters over the decades since the Vietnam era. Most of them made some sort of powerful critical comment on the ethics and morality of war. The most striking ones had especially meaningful text including statistics and/or forceful messages that coupled with illustrations to project a convincing point or captivating perspective. All of them provoked some kind of pathos or ethos appeal. Being half vietnamese, I related to the Vietnam posters depicting civilians the most. The most memorable poster is among those I posted above, it contains a photo of an old woman who looked vietnamese and a rifle held to her head with the words "This woman is vietnamese, southafrican, puertorican, colombian, black, argentinian, my mother, my sister, you, I." Despite all the seriousness of the issues being portrayed on the posters, some were able to maintain a more lighthearted tone while still conveying the importance of the message. This served as an inspirational point for my own poster project and I hope that I will be able to relay an important and serious issue through a similar, less morbid, yet still striking, appeal.
