James Welling at The Hammer

The James Welling lecture at the Hammer last Thursday was an intimate and inspirational lecture that exceeded my every expectation. Mr. Welling structured the lecture in such a way that the audience was able to see his work and what inspired his work in a chronological order beginning with his early love and use of water colors at age 14, up to his most recent abstract works in progress involving water and the photographic process. Some of my favorite bodies of work by James include his photographic series of aluminum  foil and light sources as well as his abstract photographic prints exploring color theory with only the use of an enlarger and photographic paper (no film is involved in the process). James Welling is a true revolutionary who has pushed the boundaries of photography into new and exciting areas of experimentation.
