California Design Biennial @ PMCA

The theme of the Biennial was Action/Reaction and designs that respond to current events ranging from economic or sociopolitical, in a creative or innovative way.  This theme is very relevant in a time in which the "Green" movement and sustainability are being pushed to help save and reserve earth and better production of goods, the artists works are vaulable in the movements progression.  This theme is clearly expressed through the objects, especially through the display that I found most interesting which was that of Koi Suwanngate.

She caputured the theme most closely through her use of  "Recycled vintage cashmere, slashed to precision, deconstructed and sculpted in the most feminine of shapes", I personally never knew that recycled fabric or material could be used in such a way to produce such great work.  I found her work the most interesting due to the intricate, delicate and detailed floral decorations she added to nearly all of the dress and the clever use of her native language on the pant set. In opposition the diplay that I found to be least interesting was the Artecnica Stretch bag.

They were the least interesting because they are also the least practical, being that they are just made of paper the thought of carrying a decent size and weight object is irrational. Though sometimes it is the thought that counts, it was a fairly well initial idea for the use of the billboard papers but one that can be further developed.  My overall impression of the exhibit was that all the artist did a great job of responding to the theme of action and reaction in all areas, from graphic design with the bicycle signs to architecture with the use of the airplane hanger as basis of a roof for a beautifully designed home in Malibu.
