Introduction--Winnie Quan

Hi y'all! I'm Winnie and I'm a sophomore majoring in art with an emphasis in design, and hopefully I'll be minoring in communication design too. I actually majored in architecture last year and dropped it on the first day of school this year, so it's been quite a ride. But I definitely believe that I made the right decision!
I've been associated with everything art for as long I remember. I took art classes since I was a small child up until the last year of high school, and I still am very close with my art instructors from the past. I enjoy painting and will actually be going landscape painting with my instructors this winter break so I'm super excited for that!
As for my future plans...I don't really have any. I know for sure that I want to continue on this design path since I love it so much, but I have nothing set in stone, so I'm just going with the flow right now! I am, however, so stoked to be part of the Roski family and to be pursuing what I love :)

Introduction - Joanna Lee

Hi! My name is Joanna Lee, and I'm a freshman majoring in fine arts with an emphasis in design and drawing. I've been taking art classes since I was a little girl, but I didn't officially decide to pursue it until I was a junior in high school. I have always immersed myself in the art world because my mom was always painting landscapes with her oil paints, and I'd always intently watch and admire her. I strongly believe that art isn't limited to only the studio, which is why I was involved in various art-related activities outside of my studio. I taught art to disabled children with autism in an organization called AMASE (it was also a volunteer program for teaching music too, so I volunteered for both teaching art and teaching the viola.) I also interned at Montalvo Arts Center as a summer camp director for arts camps for little kids.

A lot of my work is based off of things that I encounter in life. In terms of medium, most of my work was centered on fine art and lots of computer art, with a little touch of design, so I wanted to really learn how to incorporate design into my creations as well. That's exactly why I was really excited to take Design Fundamentals, and I really believe that I learned a lot of valuable information not only to apply to my art, but also to my work ethic in general. Although I struggled a lot with precision, I am ultimately really glad that I learned to be more patient with my artwork. Stepping into the realm of design really helped me have a different scope on what art can encompass. Things that I hadn't considered before this class were revealed more clearly to me (the principles of design, primarily. Although I had learned about them before, I didn't fully comprehend all of the terms until I put them into practice through the projects that we completed in the class.

In the future, I definitely see myself being in a career related to art. Whether that means I'll be a designer or not, I believe that the class has taught me lots of valuable life skills such as persistence, patience, and an open mind.

My Very Late Intro

Hello all! My name is Nicolette Martin and I am a freshman here at USC. So far I am loving my experience and especially all of the things I am learning in my Drawing and Design class. I recently applied to the Roski for the spring semester and I am happy to say that I have been accepted! I look forward to pursuing my BFA starting January. Before USC I had been painting and drawing ever since I can remember, taking classes in both high school and outside of school. My very first inspiration to draw was the Powerpuff Girls (I was obsessed) and today I mostly like to draw faces and figures. My favorite medium to use is either pencil or watercolor and I tend to mix both in my pieces like the one I did for my portfolio for the Roski below! Another interesting fact is that I play on the Sand Volleyball team here so I hope you all come out and support! Thank you

Color and Logos

Outro!

I never intended on being an art major. Even now, I still think it's kinda weird that they let me into Roski, but so far so good!

I'm Jackie. Born and raised in the bare definition of suburbia: Redlands, California. I am a climber, nail artist, baker, student, blogger, adventurer, selfie-taker and font snob extraordinaire.

My eyesight is pretty atrocious seeing as I spend a majority of my life in front of screens. Whether TV, laptop, desktop, phone, or iSomething, I can guarantee that I'm sitting way too close for way too long. That being said, I'm also an aspiring designer. Layout and Photoshop fill my heart with content (I plan on adding illustration to that list even though I can't draw to save my life right now).

Career goals include being the creative director for Vogue or Teen Vogue or heading the design branches for Facebook, Apple, or Google to improve their UI and graphics.

That's pretty much all there is design-ish about me!

I'm really bad at conclusions! :D

Introduction...Better Late Than Never?

Hello Sunshine!
My name is Amanda Geiger. I am a sophomore majoring in Business Administration (marketing emphasis) and minoring in Communication Design.  I have never had any formal art class experience, however, my mom owns a paint-your-own pottery studio in Spokane, Washington, so I have grown up around art and really love creating! Arts In Healing was an interest of mine during high school, so I started Artful Purpose--a program dedicated to providing disadvantaged and hospitalized children with opportunities to create art.  I also sell pottery on my etsy shop--Bluebird Pottery.  While I was initially extremely intimidated by this class, I am so glad that I took it.  I have grown so much since our first "line project."  This class has served as both a creative escape from my boring quantitate business classes and a compliment to my marketing class.  I found myself spending hours on design and really enjoying the process (except for the painstaking grey scale....that was rough.)  Design has sharpened my critical thinking skills and challenged my mind and perceived boundaries and limitations of the world around me.  I am excited because I have realized how intrinsically dependent upon each other design and business are.  I think my experience with both areas of study will serve me well as a pursue a creative business career.

Introduction

Hi!!
My name is Tatum McInerney and I am a freshman Fine Arts major with a focus in drawing/painting. In high school I did primarily drawing and painting but also took classes in architecture and digital photography. I also learned a little bit about graphic design through being the graphic designer of the school paper but the majority of the things I did was simple photoshop and layout on indesign. My favorite artist is probably Yoshitomo Nara but I also love Chuck Close, and Santiago Ydanez. In the spring I did a portrait of my little brother (I will attach a picture) that was inspired by Santiago Ydanez's work. It was one of my favorite pieces to do just because it was very experimental and I typically was more interested in drawing and not painting. Although its definitely not my favorite of the things I have done in the past, it was probably one of my favorite experiences creating a work because the mistakes I made actually added to the overall goal of the piece. Here is the website for the artist I was inspired by (Santiago Ydanez): http://www.santiagoydanez.com/es/index.php?id=2&year=2004

Introduction

Hello!
My name is Malia Cravens, I am a junior and a fine arts major. My focus is photography and I would love to explore this field in the future. I am most interested in studio photography but I also explore different aspects of photography. I haven't produced a lot of photos but so far I am learning a lot more about photography in the classes that I am taking. Design has also taught me a lot about color, and hands on concepts. I enjoy learning about the art world and plan to have a career in the future.

"Come Together Right Now"

Working together is never easy--this project exemplified the roller coaster of collaboration.  In the end, it came together and I walked out of the room proud of the work I completed.  Our group decided to design our own beer label and in the process we each made our own bottle design.  My label and design was titled "Golden State of Mind" and it embodied my personal sentiments regarding urban culture.  Each member of my group made their own label, expressing their own message about urban culture and college life to make a complete collection of beer.  I believe my work showed how people strive to get what is new and "hip" whether or not that goal is realistic or worth while, that is for every individual to decide.  Overall, I believe that this was a great learning experience and I am happy that I was in the group I was in and had to overcome the bumps that I faced.  I would do this project again any day and I think this was the most beneficial and fun project of the semester.
