All about Lines

This is my response to our project with Lines in class. Shown are the tracings I made of my original drawings, designed with three different ideas for filling in the shapes and spaces.

Leaf Observational Study

Hello everyone. For my group’s observation exercise we chose to create a sculpture with leaves- fallen leaves to be exact. The composition was set to have leaves hanging in order of smallest to largest, largest being the farthest from frontal view. The idea behind hanging leaves in this particular order was to demonstrate the comparison leaves have with human beings. The youngest, smallest, tend to have the most attention and needs the most care while the elderly, largest, fall behind the younger generations and lose much of their attention from society. However in comparison to the sizes, the elderly have the most wisdom and knowledge about the world than the smaller young-ling who fall short in understanding life and having little experience of the world. The sculpture is made to be seen in three dimensions and each side has its own purpose. Depending on the perspective one views the sculpture, the attention of the viewers also change simultaneously.
Hope you enjoy.

Pita Chips: Shawn, Tyler, Dennis

For our project, we wanted to present the pita chips in a 3 dimensional space, so that viewers could observe them from various angles and perspectives. We put up three separate strings of pita chips at different depths to create perspective and spaced each pita chip apart so observers could look at each one more closely. The strings of pita chips were also hung at eye-level so the viewer could walk up to the pita chips and see/smell/touch/(maybe even taste) the chips; this took the pita chips out of a traditional 2D space and put them in an 3D environment where people could interact with them. The draft in the room, which tended to spin some pita chips around, accentuated this 3D aspect of the project.

Class Project Tea Leaves; group members: Rachel, Nikoli,Jin

For our in class project we chose to observe the differences in tea leaves. Instead of focusing on the physical appearance of our items, we decided to shoot a short video of the tea leaves being soaked in hot water and their motion of sinking and rising in completely different ways. This simple motion illustrates the deeply imbedded differences in common mundane subjects that cannot be perceived by the naked eye. It led us to think about other such differences, such as what the same tea means in different cultures, and conversations or people that will vary for every leaf. As designers it is vital to observe and notice things that are not apparent at first sight but is significant on a deeper level, for it will help to create and mature our visions in our own endeavors.

KAWS

I cannot wait to go see the KAWS display at Honor Fraser Gallery, showing from 9/13 to 10/31.  I love his work, both the paintings and figures.  His signature twists on pop culture figures always peak my interest.  More info on this at http://www.honorfraser.com/?s=upcoming.  If you have never heard of KAWS, you should check him out, because his work is worth a look, especially when you take into account how much merchandise and propaganda he has been able to create across more than a few industries.

Pistachios: Frannie, Rebecca, Andie

In our first group project, we used pistachios to create a stop-motion video that promotes environmental awareness. We used pistachio seeds to depict the roughness of the tree trunk and colored the shells to create different shades for the leaves.  We wanted to illustrate the image directly through the typography "Go Green". Here is our final cut of the video.

Sea Glass- Jordan, Zoe, Louise

Our group used twenty pieces of sea glass as our objects.  We wanted to highlight the differences in the shape of each piece of sea glass, as well as the opacity and color.  After going in a few different directions, we started to experiment by stacking pieces of sea glass above direct light from our iPhones.  These are the final photographs we produced to present the individuality of each piece of sea glass.

Pistachios - Chelsea, Brooke, Alexandra

P i s t a c h i o s

For our first observational exercise, we wanted to focus on the pistachio and break down the process in which people take apart and eat pistachios, as well as the process of picking the pistachios from the tree.

We tackled our design in two different ways. We first created a poster layout of the development of the pistachio as it's being broken apart. We also created a hanging wall piece to represent the evolution of the pistachio as it moves from the tree to human hands. Just as the pistachio moves from the natural and organic to often a human-touched and processed process, the hanging piece also mends the two elements of man and nature.

Design Manifesto

My name is Trey and I am from the suburbs of Detroit, MI, born and raised.  I attended Cranbrook Kingswood which is a school in Bloomfield Hills, MI that has an elementary school, middle school, high school, and a graduate art school.  That being said, Cranbrook is an art focused place with brilliant architecture and its own art museum so I have been exposed to quite a bit of art and design and I enjoy it.  In high school, I took several fine art classes including drawing, painting, and metalsmithing design.  Metalsmithing quickly became a hobby and passion of mine, and throughout my time at school I created a vase, bookends, some jewelry, and a fireplace screen.  My love of art also stems from my life at home, as my parents are art fanatics, to the point where my middle name is actually Calder, after the great sculptor Alexander Calder.  Here at USC I am a Freshman pursuing a major in Business Administration and a minor in Communications Design.

Below are some of my pieces from metalsmithing and an ink pen drawing...

Hi guys I'm Alice, I'm a BFA major and am from New Zealand!
These are some photos from my school portfolio which I based on the Christchurch earthquakes. Some of my artist models were Josef Koudelka and Aaron Siskind.

Hey guys! I'm Claire, I'm from Chicago. I'm a Freshman pursuing a BFA at Roski. My art in the past has ranged from drawing and painting to large installations--I don't really have an emphasis, but I would say installations are my favorite. When it comes to painting, I usually use spray paint because of the instant gratification. I also love doing hair and makeup, and hope to pursue a career in special effects makeup for TV and Film. Here's some pictures of my work, and feel free to check out my blog for additional pictures! (I haven't posted in a while oops) clairehowesartwork.tumblr.com

Popcorn! (our first project in class: Claire, Morgan, & Maya)

This is our first project for Design Fundamentals 102. We took popcorn and dipped it in ink to make a sort of 3D collage, and then we photographed it. Then we took the photographs and made an iMovie, using the images for shorter and shorter durations to simulate the popping of popcorn. Enjoy!
