Audubon Cover

I really loved this month's cover of the Audubon Magazine. I have been using it to get inspired for my design project this week. It is an image that has been created by a graphic designer using smaller images of birds with different degrees of light and opacity.

Field-trip to the Getty

This past Saturday. my drawing 201 class went to the Getty Center to see the Rococo to Revolution: 18th-Century French Drawings from Los Angeles Collections exhibit, and I must say that it was absolutely amazing! A lot of the art work that was exhibited had a lot of expression in them, and also had an incredible amount of detail to them,too. There were a lot of figure drawings that were done in chalk and ink (which i unfortunately did not get to snap pictures of), but there were also quite a few pieces that had incorporated white gouache, like the second picture shown above, to create extremely white whites. I, for one, am a huge fan of 18th and 19th-century art, so this was a real treat for me. Unfortunately, this particular exhibit ended this weekend, so cannot necessarily tell anyone else to go see it, but I will say that the pictures do not do the pieces justice. They look pretty awesome in the pictures, but they were even more mind-blowing in person.

Doodles

Whenever I get bored in class, I turn to doodling...

Since we've just learned about gouche painting, I wanted to share one of my watercolor paintings that I've worked on this summer. I particularly used paint heavily because it had a lot of details, which made the painting look darker than other watercolor paintings usually do. This piece is a reproduction of Norman Rockwell's "Springtime" that taught me how to use brush in detail.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Observational Study

For my project, I decided to portray cinnamon toast crunch because while at a glance they are identical, when looking at the pieces individually the various differences are noticed. I thought that these cereal represented society because individually people, or a single piece of cereal is considered ordinary or unimportant. However when you put a group of individuals together or grab a handful of cereal, that is when the differences are noticed, whether that be personalities, exterior appearances, or in this case the various sizes and curvatures of the cereal. Originally I tried to create a 3-D sculpture out of the cereals to create a more enticing and aesthetically pleasing presentation to the viewer, helping to accentuate the differences and uniqueness of each cereal, but because of their different curvatures they didn't balance well together. That also fits into my metaphor about individuals in society because if you try to fit everyone into one environment or in one setting, the social structure will fail because of everyones individual differences. Because of this challenge, I therefore I took the photo from eye level as well as from bird's eye view, to still capture the various facets and portray my point.
