Art Walk

I ended up making it out to the brewery art walk which was amazing.  The space is massive and it was practically a maze of artist studios and living spaces.  I think that they have 2 of these open houses per year, so I will be sure to go to the other one as well.  The best part of it all though was that you got to see all the artist's work, and then ask them questions if you had any.  It was a very rare experience to be able to have access to the creator of every single piece there is to see at the place.

Simon Doonan on Creativity

Simon Doonan offered an interesting perspective on design and creativity at his Roski Talk on October 14th. Doonan is well-known for his elaborate department store window displays as he always challenged what was considered "conventional". For instance, if a department store was showing clothing that was pretty and polished, Doonan would dress the window to be dark and dingy. He said that he liked to "do the opposite on an extreme level". Doonan recognized how today it is becoming harder to do so as the line between conventional and unconventional is getting less clear. With so many creative outlets, including social media platforms, it's becoming harder to stand out as a creative. Doonan also questioned whether there is a such thing as good taste and bad taste. In terms of fashion, Doonan likes to take an anthropological look at clothing and believes that taste is completely subjective. As the Creative Ambassador-at-Large for Barney's New York, Doonan continues to influence the luxury department store's aesthetic from one season to the next.

Some of his most famous window displays include his 2006 "Happy Andy Warhol-idays"display and his 2009 SNL-themed display, both for Barney's New York.  (Shown below)

A Talk with Designer: Lawrence Azerrad

    Lawrence Azerrad was a passionate design. I was interested that his design is highly related in music such as album cover, or posters. He talked very friendly, and his presentation was easy to understand with videos. His talk was impressive because he shared his experience about design specifically and he had a rigid belief what creativeness is. He emphasized that the creativeness is from experience and life. He also said that the connection and purpose of design is significant part of design. His design is practical, which actually apply in many places. His story of designing was unique but it is thing that I can do it. I was very interested in his supersonic plane poster works because he made the poster after he actually took the plane.

Project 2!

I began my project in a panicked state as I rattled my brains for a theme that could be somewhat related to my artist models Karl Benjamin and Cassandre. Lego was the best I could think of so I rolled with that. I took a lot of inspiration for my drawings from Cassandre's posters and also from the Bauhaus movement which was coincidentally around the same era that lego was made, 1932. 

I am really happy with the way mine turned out after battling with gluing and having to re-do one.

Words come to life..

Finally our class project on Movement, Proportion, Emphasis & Economy, and Balance is complete! I am so relieved to be done with it after over 100 sketches and numb fingers from cutting all the designs. I decided on a concept of "Words come to life" through endangered species. Here are the final pieces and some sketches from along the way.

Creativity of Simon Doonan

    I did not know about Simon Doonan and his career until I participated in this art talk. In addition, it was a first time that I was in art talk. So the art talk was unique itself to me. He was professional in fashion which I am not interested in, and he was not only creative designer but also speaker. I was impressed that he developed his style in window dress which only few designer did. He stated in art talk that there is no 'good taste' because it is subjective concept and always better idea with better reason. I did not think about this before but his saying was firmly logical. I was inspired and touched in the importance of establishment of one's style from his art talk. I think that is the most interested and inspired explanation about success of designer.
